Arctopus echinatus - Sieketroos

  • The use of this plant has its origin in the Khoi culture.
  • The thick tap root is the part used medicinally.
  • The Afrikaans common name was recorded in the 1770's and is derived from the original Dutch `siekentroos' - `comforts the sick'.
  • Infusions, decoctions and tinctures of the root are traditionally used as a blood purifier.
  • Decoctions of the roots are sedative, and have also been used for the treatment of epilepsy.
Active Ingredients :
  • The resinous gum in the roots is chemically very similar to the resin from Alepidea rhizomes.
  • The same mixture of diterpenoids (kaurene derivatives) have been found, including ent-16-kauren-19-oic acid and other kaurenoic acids.
