Ethno-botanical uses :
The bark of Maesa lanceolata is used in cold water infusions for ancestor communication (ubulawu).
The Maasai from Kenya use the bark as a stimulant.

There are different types of ubulawu-mixes (click here for details & photos explaining what ubulawu is), one ubulawu mix consists of the following mixture of plants :
Maesa lanceolata `umagupu',
Rhus paucifloris known as `utiyi', and
Some details about the plants used in this ubulawu mix follow :

The bark of Maesa lanceolata is used in cold water infusions for ancestor communication.
This same bark is also used by the Maasai tribe in Kenya as a stimulant to combat general tiredness and weakness.

Helinus integrifolius is called `ubhubhubhu' in traditional medicine.

Synaptolepis kirkii (used in the above mentioned ubulawu mix), is known in Zulu as `uvuma-omhlope'.
Uvuma-omhlope is used to produce clear vision when entering into a trance. Root infusions are also used in rituals and assist diviners to `see’ in a metaphysical sense.
Recent scientific research shows that Synaptolepis kirkii has potent neurotrophic effects.

Chemical constituents & Biological properties :
Maesa lanceolata contains triterpenoid saponins.
The tree yields 3% embelin.
A host defence stimulant, dioxybenzoquinone, has been isolated (Kubo et al. 1983, 1987).
Maesaanin, isolated from fruit, has antifungal activity against Candida utilis (Yano et al. 1989).
