A handbook for South African Traditional Healers
____________________________________________________________
The South African Traditional Healers’
Primary Health Care Handbook was
produced in 1997 by the Traditional
Medicines Research Programme of the
University of Cape Town, an established
research group of the Medical Research
Council.
The book intends to provide advice for the
treatment of common diseases by traditional
healers, both from a western medical and
traditional perspective.
The basic concepts in both traditional and
western medical diagnosis and treatment are
explained, and common physical problems
ranging from nappy rash to cardiac arrest
are discussed. In almost all sections, both
the traditional and the allopathic approaches
are outlined.
There are sections on the anatomy and
physiology of the body systems and
comprehensive explanations of the
treatment modalities used in both traditional
and western medicine.
The book was produced in response to
requests received from traditional healers,
and was compiled after wide consultation
with traditional healers throughout South
Africa. It has been widely distributed to
clinics, traditional healers’ organisations and
individual health workers throughout the
country.
