Kalamuzi - Acorus calamus

 Widely used as tonics, stimulants, and as aphrodisiacs.
 It retards ejaculation in men, and is used for this purpose in aphrodisiac mixtures.
 The rhizome can either be used on its' own, or mixed with ` ugopo', for male impotence, as it cleanses the blood, clearing the way for an erection.
 Infusions and decoctions of the rhizome are taken for the sedative and analgesic activity.
 The rhizome is reputedly ground and mixed with cannabis in order to mask the smell.
 Pieces of the rhizome are chewed to overcome hunger and fatigue when walking long distances.
 The North American Indians used the rhizome as an inebrient.

Physiological effects :
 Rhizomes are reported to have tranquillising, sedating, and analgesic effects.
