Indigenous Uses :
 Used in the acquistion of metaphysical powers.
 A decoction of the bark is used to gain popularity, dignity, and respect.
 Used to make ubulawu.The ingestion of ubulawu plays a fundamental role in the relationship between the diviner and the ancestors.
 A decoction of the bark is taken to treat heartburn and hangovers.
 Bark and root mixtures are used to strengthen the body and purify the blood, to treat nervous heart conditions and diarrhoea, as well as for facial saunas.
 The bark can be used for dyeing, giving a red-brown or red colour; it is this bark that is used to dye sangoma's (diviner-healers) cloaks.
