Gateway into the Other World
____________________________________________________________
There are two major gates into the other world. Birth and death. Death which is used for gaining access to ancestors who have gone that way, are mostly accessed through smoke and fire. In South Africa, imphepho is used to burn, alone or in combination with other herbs. One of them is student dagga or Psoralea pinnata or blou keur. It makes you humble and is thus a very safe start for students.
Entering through birth is through water and as an agent ubulawu.
The root is stamped in a pestle and mortar into a powder and then stirred into water. The ideal is to add your remedy which is the plant you have to dream of to the ubulawu and stir until it foams and eat the foam.
Everytime you want to take more you stir again. Stirring works best with a forked stick and long strokes of the hands against one another. One should be kneeling while stirring. During the three day ritual the bubbles are not to disappear altogether so there is a regular stirring right throughout the night. On the third day you pour the remainder of the liquid over your naked body to cleanse on the outside too.
So now that you are cleaned and your senses are cleaned, what are you going to do? Who do you wish to meet? What will you offer them. What will you do with what you receive? Will you thank them?
There are many ubulawu plants and many of them have saponins.
All saponins have the effect that they are hemolytic. That is probably part of their effect on the senses. The teacher also has to watch to see that it does not go too far. Part of the process is also limiting the protein intake during this time. This enhances the process. At the end of the ritual, protein is eaten which re-stabilizes the blood after the ceremony and the answers have been found.
