The San Bushmen in Botswana induce visual `hallucinations' by rubbing the bulb on an incision made in the head.

Galanthamine, lycorine, hordenine, pancratin, and trispheridine were isolated from the bulbs and roots, among other compounds.

Galanthamine is a cholinesterase inhibitor and an analagesic.
