The use of this plant has its origin in the Khoi culture.
The thick tap root is the part used medicinally.
The Afrikaans common name was recorded in the 1770's and is derived from the
original Dutch `siekentroos' - `comforts the sick'.
Infusions, decoctions and tinctures of the root are traditionally used as a blood purifier.
Decoctions of the roots are sedative, and have also been used for the treatment of epilepsy.

Active Ingredients :
The resinous gum in the roots is chemically very similar to the resin from Alepidea rhizomes.
The same mixture of diterpenoids (kaurene derivatives) have been found, including ent-16-kauren-19-oic acid and other kaurenoic acids.
