Certain South African tribes use the plant in death ceremonies.

The alkaloid harmin has been found in bark and leaves of Strychnos usambarensis.
Beta-carbolines are reputedly found in Strychnos melinoniana.
The root of Strychnos madagascariensis is used in sangoma (indigenous diviner) initiations.
