Leaves are used as a cleanser and for pain by the Xhosa. The Sotho use smoke from the burning plants as inhalants for headaches. Powdered leaves are used as snuff by the Tswana. Contains the glycoside, ranuculin, which is converted enzymatically into the irritant volatile oil, protoanemonin. Aqueous extracts from whole plants show some anti-microbial activity.
