Division in spring or at any time in the growing season if the divisions are kept well watered until established. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions.

It is hardy to zone 6. It is in flower from July to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs).

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland).
The roots are harvested in the autumn from plants that are at least 3 years old. They are peeled and then dried.
