Chemistry and Pharmacology :

The plant belongs to the Ginger family, but has a completely different phyto-chemical profile to commercially available ginger.
The rhizome contains a high percentage of a characteristic sesquiterpenoid, which is a key phytochemical active.
Extracts of the rhizome have been demonstrated to be anti-inflammatory (prostaglandin-synthetase inhibition),
bronchodilatory, smooth muscle relaxant, mildly sedative, and anti-candidal.
The presence of antiseptic monoterpenoids contributes to the bioactivity.
A recent study demonstrated that African Ginger (S. aethiopious) has among the highest cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitory activity
of the medicinal plants tested.
Scientific research has even found that African Ginger may help prevent strokes and hardening of the arteries.
